5 Tips for Conducting EVP Sessions

There’s nothing quite like the anticipation that you might catch an EVP when you review your evidence. But do you know the ways you might contaminate your own recordings, or falsely interpret noises as voices?

It can be as simple as moving the recorder against your clothes, setting it on an unstable surface, or not marking your recordings.

So let’s dive into the 5 main tips you can follow to conduct successful EVP sessions.*

*please note that this does not guarantee you will get paranormal evidence

  1. Use a Good Recorder

Investing in a high-quality digital voice recorder is paramount for EVP sessions, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Look for a recorder with a sensitive microphone, clear audio recording capabilities, and minimal background noise interference. This will significantly enhance your chances of capturing distinct EVP voices.

Below I’ll a few options as examples, in order of affordability.

iPhone

A basic iPhone will have a high enough quality recording that it won’t distort sounds. If you already have one, this could be an inexpensive way for you to get started on your investigations without fancy equipment.

A basic $50 digital recorder

Go to amazon and type in “digital recorder.” Something in the $50 range will be sufficient enough to pick up voices near and far. Though low quality recorders such as the Panasonic RR-DR60 is highly sought after in the paranormal community, it can actually create false interpretations of voices due to sounds being poorly represented or picked up by the microphone. A newer, more basic recorder will give you more accurate soundscapes.

Zoom 360

This recorder runs in the $300 range but is one of the most high quality portable recorders you can get. Often owned and utilized by filmmakers, this mic has an excellent ability to record in stereo and has an incredibly crisp sound to it. This makes enhancing audio during review easy as pie.

2. Don’t Skimp on Time

When initiating an EVP session, it's crucial to record for an extended period. Spirits may take time to manifest and respond to your questions. By allowing for a minimum of 10 minutes of recording time, you increase the likelihood of capturing significant EVP phenomena.

10 minutes is bare minimum. Ideally you would have 20-30 minutes to commit per area of the location you’re investigating.

3. Hold Your Recorder Properly

Maintaining a steady grip on your recorder is essential for clear audio quality. Handle the device firmly but avoid covering the microphone or obstructing sound waves. Experiment with different hand positions to find the most comfortable and secure grip that doesn't compromise the audio capture.

Be mindful of moving the recorder around during the session. Movement against your clothes could result in noises that could be interpreted as whispers or hissing. It may also jostle the recorder in such a way that the ambient audio is covered essentially by the sound of your movement.

Another option is to set the device down on a steady option such as a table where no one is sitting or a countertop. This avoids any vibrations, knocking or otherwise interfering with thr audio.

4. Make Note of Noises You Hear

During the EVP session, be attentive to any sounds or noises you hear in the environment. These could include footsteps, rustling, or unexplained disturbances. Documenting such occurrences helps in distinguishing between environmental factors and potential paranormal activity.

Mark the audio by saying out loud the noise that you hear so that you can better understand the noises in review.

5. Ask the Right Questions

Crafting well-thought-out questions is vital for eliciting responses from potential spirits. Begin with introductory questions to establish communication such as asking for names, ages, and introducing yourself. Then proceed to more specific inquiries, ideally based on research you’ve conducted before arriving at the location. Be respectful and maintain a calm and focused demeanor. Allow sufficient time between questions to give spirits an opportunity to respond.
